National Exchanges Program

Welcome to the National Exchanges Program Page

Not sure what to do these holidays? Wanting more out of your medical course? Itching to travel?!

It is with great pleasure that we invite you to join the AMSA Exchange Program! We operate within the IFMSA to bring you these amazing opportunities to explore different health systems and unique cultures in the best locations in the world!

From the IFMSA webpage:
“The International Federation of Medical Students Associations (IFMSA), founded in 1951, is one of the worlds oldest and largest student-run organizations. It represents, connects and engages every day with an inspiring and engaging network of 1.3 million medical students from 129 national members organizations (NMOs) in 124 countries around the globe. IFMSA brings people together to exchange, discuss and initiate projects to create a healthier world. It gives its members the skills and resources to be health leaders. It advocates for pressing issues that matter to shape the world we want. And it does deliver: our projects, our campaigns and our activities positively impact the physicians-to be and the communities they serve.”

Currently, the AMSA Exchange Program is offered at the University of Melbourne, the University of WA, and the University of NSW

The program involves:

OUTGOING

  • 4 week placement in the country and department of your preference.
  • Professional mentorship from a consultant in your department.
  • International recognition, with an IFMSA certificate of completion.
  • Social Program – each country has a unique social program, some more popular than others! Check out these incredible promo videos!

INCOMING (HOSTING)

We also sign contracts with partnering countries for their students to come to Australia, to experience our medical system, culture and surfing beaches! Students have the opportunity to host an international student for 4 weeks, and will be reimbursed, have higher priority for their first preference for their own elective, and have international connections to last a lifetime! Please email your Local Exchange Officer (LEO) for more details on how to host a student.

Does my university offer the AMSA Exchange Program?

Unfortunately, only universities active within the IFMSA (currently, Uni of Melbourne, Uni of WA, and UNSW) can offer the AMSA Exchange Program to their students. If you would like to start a local program at your university, place your uni on the IFMSA grid and offer some incredible elective opportunities for your students, please get in contact with us! We have all the necessary information, documents and resources to help get you started.

Alternatively, there are other elective opportunities that students can undertake, many are very professional and reputable:

Also, your university may have ties with other countries for students to undertake elective. Please see your local Medical Electives Coordinator.
