Tim Martin 2

Current job title: Intern

Areas of interest: Climate change and health, Refugee and asylum seeker health, NCDs, Public health, Disadvantaged populations

What are you doing now?
Right now I’m just trying to survive internship whilst learning a bit, challenging myself and having some fun J I’m really enjoying the breadth of interesting topics covered in my Master of Public Health and am trying to “do my bit” as the Treasurer of The Water Well Project, a not-for-profit charity that provides health literacy sessions to refugees, asylum seekers and recent migrants.

What did you do after finishing medical school?
Well I only finished medical school 4 months ago so I’m not sure that’s enough time to have had an awesome global health career! In that 4 months I spent 3 weeks in Colombia and then started my internship on colorectal surgery.

What was your ‘big break’?
Being part of the AMSA Global Health family!

Where are you headed / What’s your dream job?
Woah tough one. I haven’t quite decided. I’ve always wanted to be a paediatrician, so right now I’m still aiming for that. However I’ve also known for some time that I would like do something outside of clinical work which has a long term/broader impact, and I have way too many other interests! Things I’m interested in are public health, medical admin, policy, research, politics and advocacy. How all those things come together I’ve yet to figure out!

What did you study that has helped you (during or since medical school)?
I did a Diploma of Child Health during my med school gap year, and am currently studying a Master of Public Health (current subjects are Global Health and Development and Health Promotion – yay!). But I enjoy too many things and after the MPH might consider doing a Master of Health Policy, post-graduate law or a PhD – who knows!

Top tip for students interested in a similar global health pathway?
I don’t think I’ve come far enough to have any super dooper tips, but keep being involved. I’m currently really missing the energy I got from med student global health activities and such exposure also really helps in broadening horizons, meeting new people and finding out where your passions lie. Don’t forget to also do medicine sometimes!

When I am not doing global health you’ll find me…
Sleeping. Or hanging with friends. Or playing hockey/netball/hiking. Or playing trashy video games.
